5 Reasons Why I'm Publishing The Chief of Staff Playbook, 2nd Edition

It's almost here!

Let’s get into it:

My personal motivation

I have a deeply personal interest in serving the Chief of Staff community, the CEO & Founder community, and the broader leadership community. I’m the most happy when I am able to flex multiple skills as a writer, researcher, management consultant, executive coach, C-suite systems engineer and entrepreneur to push the boundaries of Executive Operations. This publication is a labor of love and I can’t wait to share it with you very soon.

Mackenzie Lee, Cedar Founder & CEO

1st Edition playbook success

As of today, The Chief of Staff Playbook, 1st Edition has been downloaded 3,388 times by readers from 80 countries at top companies and organizations. 89.3% of them hail from the Top 10 Most Represented Countries - the US, India, UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, France, Singapore, Netherlands and Spain. Playbook readers come from top companies and organizations, including McKinsey, US Navy, Citi, Teach For America, Google and OpenAI, among others. Many have encouraged me to continue writing on this rapidly growing role in the nascent field of Executive Operations.

Immature industry standards

At Cedar, we’ve identified many paid Chief of Staff communities but few open source resources that cover the industry’s developing (but immature) standards on Chief of Staff. Paid communities include The Chief of Staff Association, Ask a Chief of Staff, and Chief of Staff Roundtable… but the only robust open source resources we’ve found are Ask a Chief of Staff's newsletter, Right Hand's newsletter, and of course our Cedar newsletter and playbook.

Only Chief of Staff Hiring, Recruiting, Roles & Responsibilities are close to reaching full maturity. Standards on Chief of Staff Onboarding, Career Pathing, Learning & Development, Performance Management, Compensation & Benefits, Succession Planning, and ROI / Business Case have a long way to go. Hence the need to publish much more.

New clients, research and insights

To address this need, over the past year we held 250+ research conversations with our clients and other industry professionals. Organizations and companies included Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL), Salesforce, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, Tripadvisor, Berkshire Partners and many more. We spoke mainly with CEOs, Founders, Chiefs of Staff, EAs, TA Directors and job seekers, but also CXOs, Board Members, Investors, Executive Coaches, and People & Culture Strategists. Our consulting work and deep research have yielded never-before published insights until now.

New LinkedIn and Beehiiv content

Finally, over the past year I've written 200+ new LinkedIn posts and dozens of beehiiv newsletter articles, boosting impressions, followers, subscribers and engagement. I am happy to report that our content is striking a chord, resulting in 1M+ impressions, 8,000+ followers and 9,000+ engagements on LinkedIn as well as 1,000+ subscribers with a 60.7% open rate and 5.8% click rate on Beehiiv. Select content will be added to the 2nd Edition.
