How many people are needed to create an Office of the CEO?
I recently ran a LinkedIn poll on the Office of the CEO and about 300 people voted Office of the CEO poll on personnel. The preliminary results are in:
About 2/3 of you believe that you need 3 people to form the Office of the CEO - a Chief of Staff, Executive Assistant and the CEO.
Just under a 1/3 of you believe that you need just 2 people - Chief of Staff OR Executive Assistant alongside the CEO.
And about 1/20 of you believe that the CEO can create the Office of the CEO herself and operate solo, if need be.
I have a theory on why option 3 was most popular - the term Office implies rigor, structure, and a more buttoned-up culture.
This means that there are codified roles & responsibilities, standard processes and special tools that are configured to make the team perform at an extremely high level.
Plus, effectively delivering all Executive Operations roles & responsibilities as a solo executive enablement resource can be overwhelming.
This is what I found anecdotally in my 1:1 research interviews with a dozen Office of the CEO professionals.
3 seems to be the magic number for the Office of the CEO.
Vote in my poll below and let’s see if you and my newsletter audience thinks the same.
