Let go & do more

Gain more freedom to do the things that matter

Did you get a lot of work done over Labor Day weekend? RED ALERT!

I’m guessing that you’re suffering from a huge workload, too many meetings and frustrating bureaucracy. You’re feeling overwhelmed and overstimulated at work, while struggling to maintain morale.

You need to let go and release the things that don’t serve you. You need more freedom to do the things that matter.

But letting go is a big problem for the modern-day professional, 21st-century leader, and busy C-suite executive. How do you let go?

Here are 3 exercises to help you start letting go:

1 Big Blocker, 3 Simple Solutions

Think of your most mission-critical, high-impact project. Could be launching v2 of a product, installing a new GTM tool for the sales team or completing a successful Series D fundraise. Identify the biggest blocker to completing this project.

With a trusted colleague or peer, lay out the root cause of the blocker. Then brainstorm 3 simple solutions that you can complete to remove it. Remember, the path forward could be over, under, around or through the blocker. Choose wisely - the path of least resistance!

Zone of Genius

Identify the activities that you like doing and that give you the most energy, while defining those that you dislike and deplete your energy. The former is your Zone of Genius and the latter is your Zone of Incompetence.

For now, look at your task list and calendar to roughly determine which meetings and projects place you in the Zone of Genius. Ask for more of them.

As for those that place you in the Zone of Incompetence, let them go by either delegating those tasks, saying no to the requestor, or relying on AI to help you along.

If you feel comfortable, share this with your boss, your peers and your direct reports. Have them complete the exercise as well. And revisit this from time to time to check in and make sure you’re staying in your Zone of Genius.

Time Rebalancing

With your calendar as a guide, analyze your current time allocation. How often do you spend your professional time reviewing proposals, sitting in meetings, or completing deliverables? How do you spend personal time across family, friends and hobbies? Add a rough percent allocation to each activity type while gauging how many hours you spend at work and at home.

Then, imagine a future state time allocation. Rebalance your schedule to serve you better as a leader. Reference your Zone of Genius and Zone of Incompetence to identify where you should and should NOT be spending your time. Let go of 3 tasks, projects or activity types that do not serve you.
