Coaching drastically improves CEO performance
Hello and welcome to the 532 new readers of the Office of the CEO newsletter! Yes, that’s right, we gained more than 500 new readers since the last edition I published late last year.
In the meantime, I went on a little creative hiatus as my team decided to take this newsletter in a different direction towards data driven CEO insights. Now, without further ado…
Hello - I’m Mackenzie, and I write about all things Office of the CEO, Chief of Staff and Executive Operations.
Every 2 weeks, you’ll get 1 new leadership chart and tactic that you can implement, a roundup of our exclusive Office of the CEO events, a list of hot Chief of Staff jobs, and more.

Coaching saves lives
The NY Times published an op-ed this morning about a Harvard Medical School study on the effectiveness of warm-ups for doctors to practice procedures that they’ve never completed before. In short, coaching for doctors increases their performance and improves patient outcomes.
In the study, doctors that practiced infant intubation experienced a 10.9% boost in 1st attempt intubation success rates. What did coaching look like? These doctors completed a short 5-10 minute coaching session just 1 hour before delivering the procedure. Looks like the juice was worth the squeeze.
Doctors Stephen Flynn, Raymond Park, Pete Kovatsis and Anupam Jena concluded their note by arguing that “if coaches in sports and music can find time to fine-tine their teams and performers, surely the same is possible in medicine.”
CEO coaching increases performance
Let’s take this one step forward. At Cedar, we believe that CEOs - just like doctors - should also take inspiration from pop stars and quarterbacks. Top CEOs would do well to seek out external coaches that can advise them on difficult issues and strategic matters. Executive coaching can and will improve leader performance.
So what’s the impact on the bottom line? There’s a noticeable lack of information and data on the benefits of CEO coaching, and so the best results we could find related to executive coaching, not just CEO coaching.
Per a primer on the ROI of executive coaching by Don Frericks, senior executive coach, executive coaching can deliver 788% ROI according to a study completed at a Fortune 500 company. Per the International Coaching Federation, executive coaching can boost individual performance by 70%, team performance by 50% and organizational performance by 48%. See below for how the study authors defined each category of performance.
These studies beg a true CEO-only study that isolates the coaching population to just CEOs. Anyone up for the challenge?
Putting CEO coaching into practice
CEOs may need to be convinced that they need coaching, so here is a list of things that an executive coach can help them with:
Strategic vision - Sharpening the company’s direction and getting their team to rally around a shared goal
Leadership presence - Commanding a room through strong and authentic executive presence
Team development - Building and managing high-performing executive teams
Organizational change - Leading transformation initiatives, especially through periods of transition
Stakeholder management - Strengthening relationships with the board, investors, media, customers and employees
Self-awareness and growth - Identifying blind spots, developing emotional intelligence, and creating structured personal development plans
Work-life integration - Navigating intense demands of the CEO role while also staying sane, healthy and fully committed
Crisis management - Moving through challenging situations with grace, making difficult decisions and building organizational resilience
Once a CEO is interested in coaching, what’s important is that they get a referral from their personal networks to an executive coach that matches their style, life history and professional track record.
And remember, the coach need not be external to the organization. In the absence of an external coach, a senior Chief of Staff or very senior Executive Assistant can play an executive coach role to the CEO.
So there you have it: the ROI and benefits of CEO coaching. Here’s to equipping CEOs with exceptional executive coaches, en route to becoming the best CEOs the world has ever seen.
